Sandra L. Portal-Andreu (Performance Artist/Choreographer/Educator) is a Miami native of Cuban/Colombian descent. Ms. Portal-Andreu independently creates and presents work throughout the community with her project-based group: bETTA moves. Her unique style of mixing dance with dialogue addresses current issues that dive into women’s roles and identities. Sandra has received support from the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, MDC Live Arts: LALA Residency 2020, Miami-Dade Public Library System, PBS’ Filmmaker Project, Judson Church/ NYC, Miami Light Project, MicroTheater Miami, and Pioneer Winter Collective’s GrassStains 2018. She has created work for CityTheatre Miami, Juggerknot Theatre Co. “Miami Motel Stories: North Beach”, and Sarasota Contemporary Dance Company. Her choreography has been described as “striking”, “smart”, “chilling”, and “having a knack for the theatrical”.

Her professional performance experience includes:  Arts Ballet Theater of South Florida, Josée Garant Dance, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet’s Lounge 2200, Camposition, and TOC Project. She received an A.A. from New World School of the Arts, a B.F.A. in Dance from Florida State University, and a M.S. in Movement Sciences from Barry University. In addition, she has trained with Fernando Bujones, Suzanne Farrell, Michael Foley, Gerri Houlihan, Roxane D’Orleans-Juste, and Thomas Richards at the Workcentre of Jerzy Grotowski in Pontedera, Italy.

Among her dance experience, Portal-Andreu has worked in numerous Film/TV and Theatre projects including: Oscar Ernesto Ortega and Carlos Betancourt’s El Ultimo Balsero, Lifetime TV’s Designing Spaces: Xfinity, AMPARO by Juggerknot Theater Co., Interview with Marilyn by Agatino Zurria,  Dancer by Dara Friedman (Perez Art Museum Miami), Carlos Ponce’s Todo lo que Soy, Iron and Wine’s Lion’s Mane, Super Bowl XXX Pregame Show featuring KISS and Cher and Sabado Gigante. She has appeared in local, regional, and national commercials and print which include MTV Latino, Google Home, Cheerios, Walmart and Intel Computers.

Since 2003, Ms. Portal-Andreu has been an adjunct faculty member of the Theatre Division at the New World School of the Arts where she concentrates on Movement for Theatre with a focus on GYROKINESIS(r) and Grotowski. Sandra has also taught at the Miami City Ballet School, Barry University, University of Miami, Vladimir Issaev’s Classical Ballet Russian Seminar and FSUdanceSARASOTA. Since 2017, Sandra has worked with ProjectArt, an organization that transforms public libraries into vital cultural hubs by offering youth year-round art classes and providing residencies for emerging artists. In 2019, she was named Miami Director.

Sandra deeply thanks her family and friends for their continuous love and support. She credits her husband, Juan and two sons, Julian and Gabriel, who encourage and inspire her to continue moving and creating.
